I said in comments to this post that I would blog about where I was going to work this summer. I think we've worked out a solution that will give me (and the organizations with whom I've been speaking) the best compromise.
I really believed that the experience I would gain by taking the job in DC would be far superior to anything I could do for the summer here in Michigan. I had applied for jobs in Florida as well, but they've been so busy down there working on stopping the ban on gay adoption that I never heard back from them, and I could wait no longer (want to bet I'll hear from them within the month?). So, I spoke with the folks here and suggested to them that my taking the job in DC would also benefit them -- by providing me with experience that I could put to work for them. I further suggested that I could work this summer and fall on putting together the legal aid/clinic plan necessary so that work could actually begin in earnest next January (the beginning of their fiscal and budgetary year). The Executive Director, his outside counsel and I met for a couple of hours and worked out a timeline, an initial budget and the scope of the initial needs assessment that I suggested needed to be documented. Then, we all agreed to do as I suggested. They further agreed that, if the plan looks solid and I am amenable to it, that I would be the attorney initially staffing the position. This gives me the very real possibility of starting something never before done here in Michigan, but for which there is a real need. I'm very excited about this. And, of course, it keeps The Girl and me here, which I know is very important for her.
I'm also quite excited about the DC job for the summer. I hate that I will be away from her for 10 weeks, but we've promised that we'll spend every weekend together -- some of which will be 3 or 4 days long. I think that, with all she wants to get done around the house, and all that I will be involved in at work, the time will fly by. A diligent researcher can find where I'm going, but I've decided to not name the organization in my blog. I hope you all will understand.
