Overcommitted

One of my dearest friends in law school has told me that I may have over estimated my ability to achieve all the goals I've laid out for myself this semester (e.g. losing 30 pounds, getting good grades, staying active in the community, having a social life, etc.).  She may be right, actually.  As early in the semester as this is I am already beginning to feel the pinch.

The problem, it seems, is my inability to say no when someone asks me for something.  For example, I was asked to join the LGBT Affairs Speakers' Bureau (to which of course I agreed).  I was asked to join the search committee to help identify and hire the new assistant directors of Community Affairs and Educational Outreach for the LGBT affairs office (to which of course I agreed). Of course, I've not backed off of my commitments with either Outlaws (as a board member) or TransForUM (as a co-director) (on that last one, believe it or not, I finally got all the contributions properly recorded to get Jamison Green paid his honorarium for his talk last semester!). Plus, extending my earlier commitment to be involved with student activities, I've joined the law school bowling league. I have bowling tonight and every Thursday night at 10 . This weekend I have Speaker's Bureau training from Friday night through Sunday night.

Somewhere, somehow I have to figure out how I'm going to fit in 15 hours a week for class and another 30 or so per week in preparation, plus about 7-10 hours per week for my exercise program.  Plus, plus, plus.

Hey, no problem! :-)

Well, it is always easier to do more when you're busy, as opposed to when you're completely sedentary! You'll manage! =)

I deliberately restrict myself to one ongoing committment in each category.

Academic: Journal of Gender & Law
Volunteering: Harlem Tutorial Program
Fun: Law Revue

I remember how over-committed I was at the end of college, and I don't want to have that same rushed-off-my-feet, substandard work thing, because I ended up disappointing everyone -- my professors, the people involved in the clubs I was supposed to be running, my friends. It's best to understand how much you have to give and make no promises beyond that. Remember, you always can give more later.
