Cold

Rats.  I have not been physically ill since my first semester last summer.  I woke up this morning (at 5 AM) with a runny nose, sore throat, itchy burny eyes,  and a deep cough (and if you think my writing doesn't "pass", you should hear my cough).

I think I could handle class ok, with the exception of this damned cough.  By the end of the class, I would be drawn and quartered.  At least when I would get sick while working I could just shut my office door and bother only my secretary (who, sitting right outside my office, still nagged me about my cough).

The thing is, I don't know what to do about it.  I think I read once when I was a kid that there is no cure for the common cold.  I can take OTC drugs, but they make me unable to focus.  Rats.

» the timing couldn't be worse from divine angst
I have managed to go nearly 18 months without getting sick. Oh, I've had some allergy issues in that time—sniffling and sneezing from molds and whatnot—but I haven't had a real, live, green-snot-blowing cold in forever. Until now. Monday night,... [Read More]

So sorry Poopsie. You need chicken soup, tylenol and bed. Hope you get much better soon.

What always keeps me sane and functional is: Advil Cold & Sinus, Halls sugar free cough drops, and DayQuil during the day and NyQuil at night :)

caution: if you're taking MAOIs, or any kind of blood pressure medication, you can't take any of the stuff Amanda recommends. (At least, not without a trip to the emergency room!)

I've been drinking peppermint tea with honey (which soothes my throat) and taking Robitussin Flu (which is surprisingly effective in suppressing coughs and making my nose stop running).

chicken soup really seemed to make me get better faster, as well as large doses of vitamin C and garlic.

I say go to the bar. Alcohol kills germs right?

I recommend Tylenol Cold (non-drowsy), but I like Keli's suggestion better than mine.

Hope you're feeling better. I also have a hard time tolerating the OTC drugs - they freak me right on out! Though sometimes I find I can get some relief from a half-dose. I hope you don't get stuck with the same cough I've got - it's been lingering for almost a month. Rest lots, drink plenty, and feel better!

The real magic liquid is plain 'ol chicken soup- not the canned or processed stuff.
Put veggies, chicken pieces and water in a pot. It's more effective than any pill and tastes a lot better too!
